ROMAN
FORUM

Originally
the inhabitants of Palatine, Capitoline and
Esquiline Hills opted for an area for their
business since it was a valley right between
the three hills and called it the Forum. Unfortunately
the area was swamp-like and unwelcoming so it
took some time to work the land. Even before
the change of the Forum into a Business center,
this was already some sort of market due to
a major concentration during the republican
era of butchers, hosteries, money exchange and
so on, making it a "market". Anyway, the central
part of the forum and the Comitium were reserved
for religious gatherings and public reunions,
so the forum had a very important role in the
Romans' social life. The Forum grew in dimension
and splendor throughout the Roman eras and became
also more crowded with the Roman conquests across
the Mediterranean. On the opposite side there
are the Imperial Forums, built afterwards and
that obscured the splendor of the Roman Forum
for some time. The entrance ramp leads directly
to the historic Via Sacra, the oldest street
of Rome. On its main street, the Via Dei Fori
Imperiali, includes many beautiful churches
like Basilica Emilia.
Fori Imperiali (Imperial Forums)n about 150
years, starting in 54BC, the entire complex
of the Imperial Forum was completed. This intricated
construction is really unique for its vastity
and urbanisticI articulation.Originally built
for ideological reasons, closely connected to
the Roman Empire's birth, Julius Caesar ordered
the construction of the first forum, that developped
itself on a large venue next to the temple of
the Venus Mother, the protecting goddess from
which the Emperor's family is said to descend.
In 113 Ad the Forums were five and reached great
dimensions, covering over 90000 mt square. But
what were the Forums for? Their first need was
for public ceremonies and religious feasts.
This construction comprehends some important
forums of great interest, like Augustus' Forum,
originally dedicated to god Mars and pawn for
the victory in some battle but that took over
40 years to be completed, the Traian's Forum
that had to undergo serious planimetric complications
before being built but is the most majestic
of all forums due to Traian's victory over the
Dacians and was dedicated to religious feasts
related to water, this forum is the widest of
all with its 300 mt in length going from Mars'Camp
to the Republican Forum. This area of forums
extends itself on Via Dei Fori Imperiali, that
comprehends along its way several churches and
part of the roman walls.
